Likely impact of latest UN sanctions on North Korea

The comments, carried by the North's official KCNA news agency, marked a further escalation of tension on the Korean peninsula after the U.N. Security Council imposed harsh new sanctions against the isolated state on Wednesday for its nuclear programme. "No signs of other provocations were seen", said Kwon.

Kim Jong-un's country earns £710million each year by exporting coal.

The U.N. resolution that brought about the sanctions aims to cripple the economic factors that fuel North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The State Department also put three entities and two individuals on its blacklist.

Power called the resolution "robust" and said that it "goes further than the previous four UNSC resolutions on Pyongyang".

Henceforth, all cargo going in and out of North Korea must be inspected.

North Korea, which views any criticism of its rights situation as part of a U.S.-led plot to overthrow its government, had warned that enactment of the law would result in "miserable ruin".

The measures include a ban on the import of aviation fuel, potentially crippling the country's airlines.

Coal Exports: The ban on North Korean exports of coal, iron and iron ore, mainly to China, will hit one of the country's major sources of revenue. The projectiles could be missiles, artillery or rockets, according to the Defense Ministry. It also has a huge army, with about 1.2 million North Koreans under arms.

"It is hard to foresee broad and consistent implementation of the new resolution, especially from players such as China, to create barriers that North Korea can not find its way around", Andrea Berger wrote in an analysis for 38 North, a Washington-based North Korea monitoring project. At least the world will be watching closely to see what happens next.

It orders countries to close all North Korean banks and terminate all banking relationships within 90 days.

Hong reiterated that China opposed the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD), an advanced U.S. missile defence system, in the Korean Peninsula, calling for prudent actions by certain countries. Experts say the crackdown on gold is meant to prevent North Korea from skirting financial sanctions by using gold as a form of payment. Russian Federation asked for a 24-hour delay on Tuesday to negotiate its interests into the resolution.

"The global community, speaking with one voice, has sent Pyongyang a simple message: North Korea must abandon these unsafe programs and choose a better path for its people", said US President Barrack Obama in a statement about the goal of the sanctions.

Just before the United Nations sanctions were unanimously adopted, South Korea's National Assembly passed a bill that would establish a center tasked with collecting, archiving and publishing information about human rights in North Korea.
