West Virginia Senate kills religious objection bill

The NRA-ILA's Dakota Moore commented on Tomblin's most recent veto, saying, "Gov. Tomblin's decision to veto this bill is unfortunate, especially considering the significant support HB 4145 had from both sides of the aisle".

Unlike previous year, though, the GOP-led Legislature has ample time to override Tomblin's veto and cement the bill into law.

"Our law enforcement officers have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe", Tomblin said in a tweet after vetoing the bill.

"When you say you can't violate non-discrimination ordinances in this bill (and) you say that guts it, then you know what the bill was all about", he said.

It now is legal for West Virginia residents to carry a handgun in plain view, but they can not have weapons that are out of sight from the people around them without having a permit.

The House bill picked up an easy 68-31 win in that chamber last month and went on to a 24-9 victory in the Senate which included a smattering of bipartisan support.

But Schneider also noted that just defeating anti-LGBT laws is not enough.

The nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute found that a 54 percent majority of West Virginians oppose a Religious Freedom Restoration Act bill (like HB 4012) that would allow small business owners to deny services to LGBT people - even for religious reasons - and that a 60 percent majority of West Virginians support protecting LGBT people against discrimination in employment, housing and access to public places. That bill was passed late in the regular session, and the Legislature had adjourned the 2015 session by the time Tomblin issued the veto. "I dread the opportunity that people will be carrying a gun to every football game, to the malls on Friday night, to their favorite restaurants", said Sheriff Steve Tanner, President of the West Virginia Sheriffs' Association.

We expect that that the Governor is going to veto our legislation, HB 4145, because he vetoed a very similar piece of legislation a year ago.

This year's veto comes with nine days remaining in the 2016 regular session.
