While the Federal Bureau of Investigation chases Apple, Amazon disables encryption on Fire OS

As the Guardian notes, the move is especially baffling considering Amazon is one of the myriad tech companies supporting Apple in its fight against the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Amazon chief technology officer Werner Vogels openly talking about the importance of encryption at the Mobile World Congress a few weeks ago.

An Amazon spokeswoman said the company removed some business-oriented features from its devices "that we found customers weren't using". Law enforcement authorities have called for so-called "backdoors" that would allow them to get pass the encryption of the millions of devices for easier investigations and terrorist threat monitoring.

"Amazon could just as easily be encouraging its users to adopt it rather than remove it as a feature. Whether or not this has sufficient impact to make Amazon re-think their strategy remains to be seen". We've reached out to Amazon for clarification on why encryption was removed, and the company says consumers simply weren't using encryption.

Coventry and Warwickshire owners of Amazon Fire tablets are being warned of a product recall. This hasn't stopped cybersecurity experts and privacy advocates lambasting Amazon's decision. The online retailer said that it came out with a clarification on the proper use of encryption entails in its view. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has quietly removed support for disk encryption for its Fire tablets. Apple strengthened the encryption on all iDevices in iOS 8, making it so that no one could decrypt the storage without knowing the user's passcode.

"Amici often compete vigorously with Apple - and with each other".

Chris Boyd, Malware Intelligence Analyst at Malwarebytes, told CBR that the move could prompt people to not use the device: "The removal of this feature says a lot about people in general in terms of their security priorities. That's a massive step backwards".

Whether you choose the free charger from Amazon or the £12 in credit, Amazon will send you a pre-paid envelope, so you can send the faulty power adapter back to them. Adapters shipped with U.K. Fire HD and U.K. Fire HDX have given Amazon no reason to worry, and Fire and Fire Kids Edition tablets shipped to other regions are believed to be safe as well.
