Zika virus: Traveler child marks first case in Utah

In two of the suspected cases, the infection was confirmed in women whose only known risk factor was sexual contact with an ill male partner who had recently traveled to a Zika outbreak area, the agency said.

The number of pregnant women infected has increased since mid February, when the federal Secretary of Health said there were only 80 cases of Zika, including six cases of pregnant women with the virus.

The virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites from the infected Aedes mosquito. "Sexual transmission is less common", Marcella Bobinsky, acting director of public health at DHHS, said in a statement. These mosquitoes are not found in the Granite State.

Fulton noted that only roughly 20 percent of those affected by Zika show symptoms and for general spring break travelers, routine testing for Zika is not likely recommended unless they are very sick.

Colorado health officials confirmed the state's first two Zika cases this year. Three of those cases are in Lee County and all are travel-related. Doctors are unsure whether the virus has mutated to become more risky, or if there is some other reason for the birth defects.

Zika has been circulating swiftly through the Caribbean and South America during the past several months.

Also, those who visit those regions are advised to protect themselves from mosquito bites during their stay and for a week after they return to avoid infecting a mosquito in this country and spreading Zika to others.

In U.S. territories, however, 39 locally acquired cases have been reported - 34 in Puerto Rico, four in American Samoa and one in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Zika epidemic has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization because of the disease's link to birth defects and neurological illness.

There is also concern that Zika virus could be linked to cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that can cause paralysis. There is no vaccine against Zika and no medicine to treat the virus.
