Nathan Carman has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism and ran away from his CT home in 2011, prompting a multi-state search. "He got the life raft".
A Vermont man who spent a week at sea in a life raft before being rescued by a passing freighter was questioned by Coast Guard officials Tuesday and reunited with his father. His mother hasn't been found.
A man lost at sea for almost a week is expected to arrive back on land Tuesday, a day after he was found alive at sea on a life raft.
Nathan Carman told Coast Guard officials that the boat the two were in sank in the Atlantic Ocean on September 18, a day after leaving for a fishing trip.
"I was bringing one of the safety bags forward". He then boarded a life raft and tried fruitlessly to find his mother. Have you found her?
"He said his boat sunk off Block Canyon, and we scoured 62,000 nautical miles of sea", she said.
Coast Guard officials do not plan to ask pointed questions about Linda Carman's disappearance, Pinneo said.
Hartford attorney Hubert Santos said on Monday that his firm also planned to have someone in Boston when Carman arrived.
He recounted the incident for Coast Guard officials during a phone call Monday.
The mother and son had left for their fishing trip from Point Judith, Rhode Island. South Kingstown police did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
His mother is still missing and is presumed to be dead.

Court records show that a Vermont man who spent a week on a life raft in the Atlantic Ocean before he was rescued recently was a suspect in the unsolved 2013 killing of his grandfather in CT.
According to a search warrant for Carman's apartment obtained by the Hartford Courant, Carman was the last person known to see his grandfather alive on December 20, 2013, because he had dinner with him at his home in Windsor. He had been shot three times. Carman was not charged.
Santos declined to comment on the Chakalos homicide. The Coast Guard planned to conduct a face-to-face "survivor debriefing", which Chief Petty Officer Luke Pinneo said is "protocol anytime we have a boat sinking at sea".
A week later, the Coast Guard suspended their search for the pair. Nathan Carman was found in good condition two days later.
On Sunday, crew aboard the Chinese freighter "Orient Lucky" spotted Carman floating in a raft about 100 miles south of Martha's Vineyard.
Carman could be seen disembarking from a Coast Guard boat in Boston Tuesday (below).
Local 22/44 has obtained the search warrant for Nathan Carman's residence in Vernon.
In the audio recording, Carman said he and his mother were out in his fishing boat when it began to rapidly take on water. Friends said it was not unusual for the Carman' to go out night fishing, as they both loved to fish. The officer tells him they have not found her.
Windsor police Capt. Thomas LePore said Tuesday the investigation into Chakalos' killing remains open and active.
LePore said police interviewed Chakalos' relatives, including Nathan and Linda Carman, as part of the investigation.
