Speaking in Manchester, Fox said the United Kingdom would seek to establish an independent position within the WTO post-Brexit and that the country, "has a golden opportunity to forge a new role for ourselves in the world, one which puts the British people first".
Liam Fox's insistence that Britain can maintain free trade with the European Union post-Brexit is a "work of fantasy", Nick Clegg has said.
"Serious uncertainty in your trading and political relationships with the rest of the world is risky if you allow it to persist", Mr. Clarke warned.
Speaking separately yesterday, Italy's Prime Minister Mr Renzi insisted he "tried" to keep the United Kingdom in the EU. By naming the date she plans to send a letter to Brussels, the prime minister would set herself on an irreversible course before the cabinet has agreed its negotiating objectives.
Mr Letwin said the United Kingdom needed to retain access to the single market while gaining control over immigration at the same time.
Mrs. May was forced to hastily contradict her Brexit Minister in the House of Commons less than 24 hours later. May should expect more of the same.
The trade minister, who favours a so-called "hard Brexit" or a clean break with the European Union and its single market, also said it was in both Britain's and the EU's interests for their post-Brexit trading environment to be at least as free as it is now.
"There will clearly be commentary from a variety of sources as we move forward, but we're not going to give a running commentary ourselves - nor speculate on outcomes of negotiations that haven't happened yet", May's spokeswoman said.

Most are content with article 50 being triggered in early 2017, as this gives time for the United Kingdom to leave before the next round of elections to the European parliament in 2019. "Nobody has the foggiest notion of what they want us to do".
The report finds that United Kingdom taxpayers face having to pay out £65 million a year simply to ensure that a team is in place to plan for Brexit.
Questioned over the controversial £350 million figure that the Vote Leave campaign promised could go to the NHS, he told ITV's Good Morning Britain: "The £350 million is the amount of money per week, approximately. that actually goes across to the European Union".
Some 62 per cent of Scottish voters opted to remain in the European Union in the June 23 referendum, in which 52 per cent of Britons overall voted to leave. "The European Union is in bad shape".
"It is potentially the beginning of what I might call "post geography trading world" where we are much less restricted in having to find partners who are physically close to us", said Fox.
And it's not just the current Prime Minister who Clarke is critical of.
"I have no doubt that's what we're going to get", he said, saying that it was in the EU's own interest.
