When that report didn't air immediately, someone leaked the tape to The Washington Post on October 7.
As derision and outrage against Bush flooded social media, he and NBC began negotiating his exit.
Mr Bush was suspended indefinitely by the broadcaster for his part in the leaked 2005 conversation involving himself and Donald Trump.
On Monday afternoon, ET confirmed that Bush was leaving Today, following the release of a 2005 tape in which he's heard laughing and joking as Donald Trump makes lewd comments about women. "As a longtime member of the NBC family, we wish Billy all the best as he moves forward", she continued about the reason behind the departure. "We wish him success as he goes forward".
"I believe my husband", she said.
The separation agreement with NBC includes no non-compete clause, meaning Bush is free to seek work elsewhere right away, reports the Associated Press, citing an unnamed source. Financial terms of the deal were kept confidential.
Trump, who has kept a low profile during her husband's presidential bid, gave her first television interviews since the October 7 release of the tape that has shaken Donald Trump's campaign.
"I said to my husband that the language is inappropriate, it's not acceptable, and I was surprised because that is not the man that I know", she said on October 17.

The Raiders have to convince two thirds of the National Football League owners to approve the move. Obviously there's the 49ers, but they're located 55 miles away from San Francisco in Santa Clara.
Trump said her husband and Bush were engaged in "boy talk, and he was led on -like, egged on -from the host to say dirty and bad stuff".
When Cooper pointed out that Trump was 59 when he said those comments, Melania answered, "Correct, and sometimes I said, I have two boys at home".
In the 2005 tape, which was first revealed by The Washington Post, Trump discusses unsuccessfully seeking an affair with another "Access Hollywood" employee, Nancy O'Dell.
"I said to my husband that, you know, the language is inappropriate. It's like a magnet".
He goes on to say "you can do anything" to women "when you're a star" and also brags about trying to grope and kiss women.
"Grab them by the p--".
Looks like you can't do anything, as Donald Trump once claimed. And with the details. did they ever check the background of these women? Trump apologized after the release of the video, calling his comments "locker room talk".
The third hour features lighter fare: interviews with actors Nick Offerman and Ethan Hawke on Tuesday, a segment on the hosts of HGTV's "Fixer Upper" and another offering style advice to married couples.
