There was some concern that sales of Nintendo's new video game console might be stunted by the sour taste left in gamers' mouths from the Wii U. The post-launch frenzy seemed to dispel those concerns, and we can now confirm that sales of the new Nintendo Switch console are soaring.
Nintendo also revealed that its more affordable 3DS console is continuing to sell well, with 7.27 million units sold over the past fiscal year, an increase of 7% year-on-year. "As a home console, shipments would likely fall short of the Wii, but given that Switch users are less likely to be light users vs. the Wii base, we expect a higher tie ratio and profitability". Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS has also continued to do well, reaching 2.34m units, while Kirby: Planet Robobot has sold 1.36m units.
It's believed that the game shifted more copies than its console as a result of people either buying a collector's edition ahead of the Switch's launch, or due to people buying copies of both the Switch and Wii U versions of the game. Pokémon Sun & Moon performed very strongly at the end of 2016, having now sold 15.4 million copies, which is closing in on Pokémon X&Y's 16.1 million sales, at which point it will be the best selling 3DS game.
The Nintendo Switch posted impressive out-of-the-gate sales, and could potentially outsell the life-to-date numbers of its predecessor within its first year.
The company is projecting that the Switch will ship over 10 million units by the end of the financial year.

But it adds that "unfortunately, "there are no new tracks, so veterans of the racing game will "pretty much know what to expect". While Nintendo's top-notch art style works well in both docked and handheld modes, the game hasn't been tweaked all that much.
Profit from a new console typically peaks a couple of years after launch when there is a wide choice of game titles.
The Wii U itself has not fared well, selling just 760,000 units as it ceased production, alongside software sales of 14.8 million units. In addition, there were relatively fewer offerings of downloadable content during this period, so digital sales were also down to a large extent on the same period past year.
These titles haven't been given any detail, we don't even know if they're first party or not, so we could be looking at even more first party Nintendo games soon. Nintendo says Super Mario Run is closing on 150 million downloads, and though Fire Emblem Heroes has managed only a tenth that number, it's been more profitable. Profit was $921 million, compared to $148 million a year earlier.
Over the last 12 months, Nintendo has boosted its net profit by five times, earning around $4.4 billion in revenue.
Amiibo sold 9.1 million figures and 9.3 million cards for the entire fiscal year. Contrast with the current fiscal year's operating profit of 29.4 billion yen. One possible explanation is that fans bought the game before purchasing the Nintendo Switch console, which could make sense since the Switch is still facing some supply issues.
