North Korea's propaganda website on Thursday reviled U.S. Vice President Mike Pence in its first response to his recent warning to Pyongyang not to test United States resolve and military strength.
Speaking aboard the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier at the US Yokosuka naval base in Tokyo Bay, Mr Pence said the Trump administration would continue to "work diligently" with allies like Japan, China and other global powers to apply economic and diplomatic pressure on Pyongyang.
North Korea is the most risky and urgent threat to the peace and security of the Asian Pacific.
Mattis credited China with trying to help get the North Korea situation "under control" with the goal of denuclearizing the peninsula.
Yet Abe and Pence affirming the foundation for a peaceful solution represents a shift in tone for the US following the nation's recent airstrike on Syria, use of a massive ordnance air blast bomb in Afghanistan and orders to send the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier near the Korean Peninsula.
Lavrov's comments come after President Trump's authorization of a strike on a Syrian airbase two weeks ago caused a flurry of speculation that North Korea might also face military action in response to further provocations.
Said Abe: "It goes without saying that it is a matter of paramount importance for us to seek diplomatic efforts as well peaceable settlements of the issue".
Mr Pence, whose visit started in South Korea the day after the failed launch by North Korea of what analysts said could have been a new missile, said the threat from the isolated regime was growing.

The government says Syrian warplanes struck an al-Qaida arms depot that contained chemical weapons. It is unclear whether they will ever be able to return to their homes.
US Vice President Mike Pence and Japanese leaders began talks on Tuesday expected to focus largely on trade with America's anchor ally in the region, though tensions with North Korea loomed large. While Obama's strategic patience doctrine often receives bipartisan criticism, Lavrov questioned the accuracy of the label given previous US led sanctions against the DPRK. The trip so far has been dominated by US and allies' concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile development efforts.
The country's Vice-Foreign Minister, Han Song-ryol, told the BBC Monday that North Korea would continue to test missiles "on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis", and warned an "all-out war" would result if the USA took military action.
The Navy said earlier that the carrier will arrive in the Korean region next week.
He did not comment on what might have caused the missile to fail but a n official said the missile was a Scud variant that the U.S. calls a KN-17.
North Korea is seen as toning down its condemnation as its foreign ministry has yet to release its stance on Pence's warning, analysts said.
"I have noted the recent report".
"When we requested to restore the agreed language that was of political importance and expressed commitment to continue to work on the draft. the USA delegation without providing any explanations cancelled the work on the draft", the Russian U.N. mission said in a statement.
