Earlier on Wednesday, US Secretary Of State Rex Tillerson said the "reign of the Assad family is coming to an end" but also acknowledged US-Russia relations were marked by a "low point" of trust.
The assault last Tuesday in Syria's Idlib Province led President Trump to authorize the US military two days later to fire 59 cruise missiles at a Syrian government airfield, from which the USA government believes the Assad regime launched the attack.
Lavrov also said Moscow was ready to revive an air safety agreement in Syria. As a presidential candidate previous year, Trump criticized Obama and Hillary Clinton, the former USA secretary of state during Obama's first term and Trump's opponent in the election, for getting involved in foreign conflicts and waging wars in other countries.
Tillerson said the USA has conclusive evidence that the Syrian government planned and executed the chemical attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun that left at least 89 people dead.
Russian Federation has been defending Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, saying that there's no evidence that the Syrian government was behind the chemical attack.
"Right now we're not getting along with Russian Federation at all", said a blunt President Donald Trump as tensions between the two nuclear powers continue to worsen. "It'd be a fantastic thing if we got along with Putin and if we got along with Russian Federation, and that could happen, and it may not happen; it may be just the opposite".
The meeting took place along with Lavrov and came after Lavrov issued Tillerson a warning against any further US strikes on the Syrian regime.
"We have reiterated our position and were united in stating that the attack was an act of aggression, which blatantly violated the principles of global law and the UN Charter", Lavrov said. Iran's Mohammad Javad Zarif emphasized that the participants warned that any unilateral action by the U.S.is unacceptable.
Seeking to salvage ties, US and Russian Federation agree on Syria probe
The Secretary of State described Russia's alleged involvement in the 2016 vote as a "serious issue" and "one that we know" about. President DonaldTrump (R) at a press conference at the White House in Washington D.C., the United States, on February 15, 2017.
"The working level of confidence in Russian-American relations, especially at the military level, under the administration of Donald Trump, has not improved, but rather worsened", he said.
Syria has denied any responsibility for the assault which killed at least 87 people, many of them children.
China typically sides with Russian Federation in the Security Council, including in opposing US -backed measures to punish Syria for its use of chemical weapons.
Russia's hopes for a thaw in Russia-US ties following Mr Trump's election have been shattered by the congressional investigation into alleged ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia. "I do not know who saw them".
He added it was "highly likely" the Assad regime was behind the chemical attack, which prompted the United States to attack a regime airbase in retaliation.
Mr Putin's decision to host Mr Tillerson signalled Moscow's intent to maintain communication with the United States even as the countries bash each other publicly in louder and louder tones.
