Following the United States launching an airstrike on a Syrian airfield in response to a chemical attack, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made some appearances on the Sunday news shows to discuss the country's policy when it comes to Syria.
In remarks from his Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, President Donald Trump explained his decision to launch a military strike against a Syrian air base Thursday night, expressing disgust at the "very barbaric attack" by Syria. Rubio, in an interview on ABC's "This Week" Sunday, responded to earlier comments on the show by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that the USA priority in Syria is to defeat ISIS.
Rubio has long argued that Assad needs to be removed from power in Syria.
"We've seen what that looks like, when you undertake a violent regime change in Libya, and the situation in Libya continues to be very chaotic", he said.
"The real failure here has been Russia's failure to live up to its commitments under the chemical weapons agreements that were entered into in 2013", Tillerson said during an interview on ABC's "This Week", calling the attack a product "in large measure a failure on Russia's part to achieve its commitment to the global community".
It was the first time the United States has intervened directly in the Syrian civil war against the Russian-backed regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

At some venues, Maduro supporters reportedly threw rubbish onto protesters on the road from residential buildings. Tuesday's instability sent Venezuelan bonds lower, with the benchmark 2027 paper's price off 4.4 percent.
It killed at least 87 civilians, including 31 children, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor.
But there have been repeated allegations of chemical weapons use by the government since then.
Days later, after a chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians that the USA blames on Assad's regime, the Trump administration sharpened its rhetoric and launched several dozen cruise missiles at a Syrian airfield, marking the first US military effort against the Assad government. "The failure related to the recent strike and the recent awful chemical weapons attack in large measure is a failure on Russia's part to achieve its commitment to the worldwide community", he added.
Rouhani and Russian President Vladimir Putin also spoke by telephone about "the unacceptable nature of American aggression", a statement from Moscow said.
But Tillerson, who is scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow later this week, indicated that there would be "no change to our military posture" regarding Syria.
In addition, a bomb killed one woman and wounded 25 others in the city of Homs, officials said.
