Mental Health First Aid Training is an evidence-based program created to help prepare adults and teen leaders to recognize and address mental health problems among youth and adults of all ages.
Central Wellington mental health and sexual health service Evolve had to turn away 500 young people in need since January because it was struggling to cope with numbers, as Capital & Coast DHB considered throwing the service a lifeline.

Ontario supports the Centre for Innovation in Campus Mental Health and the Good2Talk/ Allo, j'écoute mental health helpline, which provides direct counseling and referral services 24 hours a day, seven days a week in English and French.
There's recognition from the Health Minister that mental health is a huge issue, funding will be allocated from already stretched District Health Boards. In addition, mental health assessments and medical screenings will be offered.
Good mental health is more than the absence of a mental health problem.

"For example, around 60 per cent of the people who die by suicide in New Zealand each year have not interacted with a mental health or addiction service in the previous 12 months".
BHD will also share stories, information and resources on social media and encourage people to have conversations by tweeting about the mental illness using #mhmconvo.
"But the health system and wider social sector is responding".
Earlier this year the organisation vowed to break the silence around mental health by signing the Time to Change Employer Pledge, which aims to reduce mental health related stigma and discrimination. But the fiscal support that's needed to ensure access to treatment have always been insufficient, she says.
Dr Coleman said over the past decade demand for secondary mental health and addiction services had increased from 2.3 percent of the population to 3.6 percent - from around 96,000 people to nearly 168,000 people.
