A panel of doctors made a decision to abort the foetus of the 10-year-old girl, who was found to be 5 months pregnant after allegedly being raped repeatedly by her stepfather. Her stepfather was arrested in an ongoing case of abuse, authorities said. Earlier on Tuesday, the court asked the doctors' panel to take a call as per their wisdom.
"We are examining the female to determine the best method for abortion". The little girl's request for abortion is now in the hands of justice.In recent months, the Supreme Court of India has received several demands, some of the female victims of rape who want to end the pregnancy after the 20th week.
The pregnancy came to light last week when the girl's mother suspected her daughter was pregnant and took her to a doctor. Yet, she said, she wanted her husband to be released from jail to be able to run the household and raise their four children.
Once confirmed, the girl told her mother the accused - who is also her paternal uncle - had been sexually assaulting her, according to local media reports. "The victim has been given counseling and necessary medical care, and her statement was recorded before a magistrate", Nain said.
In one case, villagers on Friday found the disfigured body of a woman who was gang-raped and murdered in the northern town of Rohtak.
