On Tuesday Supreme Court of India held Justice Karnan for its contempt and asked Police Chief of West Bengal to arrest him immediately. The bench said Justice Karnan has to be viewed as an "ordinary citizen" of the country and can not be treated like a sitting judge in this case.
He said that he was saying this as a counsel and not on behalf of Justice Karnan.
The Supreme Court agreed on Thursday to consider hearing a petition by Calcutta high court justice CS Karnan seeking a review of his conviction and six-month jail sentence amid continuing confusion over his whereabouts.
Although media and Chennai police were told that Justice Karnan had left the Chepauk government guest house on Wednesday morning to visit Kalahasti (a temple town that lies approximately 130 km north of Chennai, in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh), only his cellphone had travelled to Kalahasti while he took a direction towards north, Kumar said. The West Bengal police is yet to arrest the judge. Police sources said the team went to Tada after his mobile signal was last picked up near the Andhra Pradesh town close to the Tamil Nadu border.
Karnan, who was divested of his judicial and administrative powers following his tussle with the apex court, had on May 8 "sentenced" CJI Khehar and seven other judges of the Supreme Court to five years imprisonment after he reportedly "found them guilty" under the Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989) and the amended 2015 Act.
He has also said in his application that the SC should recall its order which sentenced him to six months in jail.
Soon after the sentence was pronounced, Justice Karnan called the media to his room in the Chennai guest house and hit out at the top court.
Oil prices rise on expectation of output cut extension
Brent crude was up 40 cents at $49.50 a barrel by 0930 GMT. "OPEC members have no choice but to talk up prices by signalling an extension to the production cuts agreement".
"We are of the unanimous opinion that Justice CS Karnan has committed contempt of court, judiciary and judicial process of the gravest nature".
Karnan said he was being given "insignificant and dummy" portfolios because he was a Dalit.
Speculations are that the Calcutta High Court judge may have fled the country.
"The seven judges looking at my case are corrupt". The Supreme Court Bench had ordered Justice Karnan to be medically examined and on May 4.
He tagged the apex court judges as "accused" for not being present.
However, a belligerent Justice Karnan had told the court he would not appear before it again even if he was arrested and put in jail.
