At least 20 people were killed and 30 others wounded when a suspected suicide bomber struck a Shia mosque in western Herat province Tuesday evening, according to a hospital official.
The incident took place around 8:30 pm local time near Jawadia mosque in the city but the type of the explosion has not been ascertained so far.
The attack was carried out by two people, Afghan Tolo News also said, citing local security officials.
One year ago, a massive bomb blast killed at least 84 people, majority Shiite Hazara, as they were holding a rally to demand better life conditions.

The attack comes a day after an attack on the Iraqi embassy in Kabul, which was claimed by the ISIS, killed two people.
IS has been expanding its footprint in eastern Afghanistan and has recently claimed responsibility for several devastating attacks in the capital.
Afghanistan is still suffering from insecurity and violence years after the United States and its allies invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror. The report has yet to be confirmed by local sources in Afghanistan.
