Goodell is dealing with a league in turmoil in 2017.
A second source close to the league told CNNMoney that Goodell's extension is "more likely than not, but still not almost a sure thing".
Goodell's current contract is slated to expire in 2019.
In a letter sent last week to owners on the committee, Jones claimed he "has discovered a number of very concerning issues" while engaged as a committee member, including that "the Ownership (sic) and Jerry Jones now understand that they have been unquestionably misled" by Blank and that "critical facts" have been misrepresented regarding Goodell's contract. Goodell was paid $31.7 million in 2015, the most recent figure publicly available. An NFL spokesman disputed that report as "nonsense".
And many place the blame squarely on the shoulders of Goodell, who has chosen to rule with an iron fist in some disputes and dispassion bordering on passivity in others.

It also has 52 percent more displacement due to the intercooled supercharger system, which was not previously seen in LT4. Both wings are connected directly to the chassis - just like C7.R racecar - for extra strength and stability.
Years of skyrocketing growth put National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell on the highest throne in sports, a lucrative gig earning him, at one point, $44 million per year. But he also says players have the freedom to express themselves.
He said last month that "we want our players to stand" during the anthem, but stopped short of imposing a rule for players to do so. The NFL said there were three incidents over five days. "NFL leadership has hurt Papa John's shareholders".
Jerry Jones' war against Roger Goodell could come back to bite him.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank has released an official statement regarding the potentially controversial contract extension talks for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
But months of repeated missteps, failures and black eyes have sawed the legs off that throne, and Goodell now finds his contract extension anything but a rubber-stamp guarantee ... even as he's apparently making some eyebrow-raising contract demands. He's asking for a pay raise that will get him almost $50 million a year. As a result, Goodell's salary is no longer public. Goodell, 58, has been commisioner since 2006.
