Tina Fey says it's a 'terrible time' for women in comedy

It was Carlock who streamlined Barker's narrative, eliminated the Pakistan section and added some sub-plots to enhance the story. "Yeah, we were competitive over stories to a certain extent, but we would also help each other".

Once you get past the fact Fey has less range as an actor than others from the comedy realm (Kristin Wiig, for instance), WTF isn't a bad movie, although it isn't a comedy in the sense that it's full of slapstick moments or quippy one-liners; Carlock and Fey do find plenty of good times to throw in some of the humor they've done so well on television for years. True to its title, as well as its flawed but sympathetic protagonist, "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is more confused than cynical or opportunistic. "It's about relationships. It's not political and it's not Dr. Strangelove".

"It's about a woman who is sort of making a choice to blow up her existing life and go on this adventure, for lack of a better word". If it did, it would be a surprise Best Actress nomination for Fey. There, the majority of cast and crew hung out in the back room, gabbing and eating, while Colin Jost and Steve Higgins chatted for a long while near the bar, and Fey's former "30 Rock" co-star Judah Friedlander made an appearance later in the night. When Fey was asked what she'll miss about hosting the Golden Globes, now that she's been a year away from taking on the duties, Fey mentioned Garner again. "If you were to really look at it, the boys are still getting more money for a lot of garbage, while the ladies are hustling and doing fantastic work for less". And Barker says that they also re-created Afghanistan in New Mexico with realistic results, including the combat sequences. "So we were able to get incredible access".

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot's biggest misstep is a failure to find the right tone.

As newspapers have closed and news conglomerates grown, realistic portrayals of the people who gather news are critical to the survival of journalism as a democratic institution.

Rechristened Kim Baker, Fey's character is a female counterpart of the adrenaline junkies in "The Hurt Locker", but with a more pronounced appreciation of the farcical. "I'm not really drunk at all!"
