Feingold criticized the incumbent Johnson for putting more emphasis on controlling the USA border, rather than implementing comprehensive immigration reform to allow undocumented workers stay in the country legally. Johnson won that, ending Feingold's 18-year run in the Senate.
"Your right to keep and bear arms, your ability to protect your family is at risk", Johnson said in the ad, which was posted online in August 2016. While presidential nominee Donald Trump has campaigned on building a wall, Johnson says "You need better fencing, you don't need a 1,700-mile wall". Feingold served as a state legislator in Madison before his first election to the Senate in 1992. Feingold says the question for voters is, "Who is this guy going to vote with?" Feingold led Johnson 46 to 44 among likely voters in a Marquette University Law Poll this month.
Veteran journalist Mike Gousha will moderate Tuesday's debate.
"She's not ideal, but she's so much better than Donald Trump", said Feingold, who added that Trump would "destabilize" the world.
Johnson said he would only vote for judges, not liberal activists.
In fact, One Wisconsin Now, which has been a tireless advocate for student loan relief, has labeled Johnson the worst US senator on the student loan crisis.

Martin's slump began during the regular season the four-time All-Star catcher is 5 for 54 with two RBIs dating to September 25. Napoli led off the fourth inning with his first homer of the postseason on a 0-1 fastball to give Cleveland a 2-1 lead.
"You bet I would repeal it in a heartbeat", Johnson said.
Responding to Trump's recent allegations the election is "rigged," Johnson said he didn't believe that to be true, but agreed with other public complaints made recently by the GOP nominee.
Johnson said he would support raising the minimum wage by tying it with inflation, but opposes a large increase, saying it would result in job losses. Johnson said both he and Donald Trump are change agents, while Feingold said Hillary Clinton is not ideal, but he stands by his assessment that she is honest and trustworthy.
The debate aired on Channel 12. Russ Feingold are preparing for their second and final debate with just three weeks left in one of the nation's most closely watched Senate races.
Johnson's campaign was buoyed by an October 9 CBS News Battleground Tracker poll that showed the race within the margin of error, with Feingold ahead by 2 points. Johnson is a first-term Senator who owned and operated a plastics manufacturing company in Oshkosh before defeating Feingold for his seat in 2010.
Feingold has never trailed in the Marquette poll, although it has shown the race tightening.
