White House: High School Graduation Rates Up Across Nation

In total, the high school graduation rate increased by 4.2 percent since the 2010-11 school year.
Gaps between student groups continued to close but remained large: almost 88 percent of white students graduated on time, 10 percentage points higher than Hispanic students (78 percent), 13 percentage points higher than black students (75 percent), and 16 percentage points above Native American and Native Alaskan students (72 percent).
High school graduation rates have reached a record high of 83.2 percent, continuing a steady increase that shows improvement across all ethnic groups, according to federal data released Monday. Hispanics, African-Americans and Native Americans were around the 70 -to 80 percentile.
The nation's high school graduation rate has risen steadily since 2010-2011, when states started using a consistent, four-year adjusted standard to measure high school completion.
Russell Rumberger, a professor of education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, said in a February interview with NPR that diploma requirements vary greatly from state to state.
